About Our Church

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church:

The original church was established after the Civil War in 1879. It was placed on a Charge, known as Boyds Charge. The Charge included Francis Asbury Methodist Episcopal in Germantown, MD, John Wesley Methodist Episcopal in Clarksburg, MD, St. Mark’s Methodist Episcopal in Boyds, MD, and Montgomery Chapel in Hyattstown, MD. Later St. Mark’s became the oldest church on the then, Boyds Charge which was abolished in 1992, at which time St. Mark’s became a Station Church. The church was completed under the leadership of Reverend Benjamin Myers. The Rev. Myers solicited funds from the residents of Boyds community. One of the residents was Colonel Boyd, from whom the community was named. The church was completed September 24, 1893.
